Ya, I tend to find it hit and miss as well. But I've had some brilliant ones, especially from Poland strangely. $7 is ludicrous - for half that you can get a great Belgian beer.
I've never had St. Peter's honey porter, but their cream stout is not the best stout I've ever had. However, before writing them off completely you should try their golden ales and organic ales. These are refreshing, nicely hopped, and have low-to-moderate carbonation. They're really delicious, creamy beers and heck, they come in cool flask bottles!

short and to the point - porter is a bit of a hit and miss for me. $7?!
