Morgon Cote du Py Vieilles Vignes Potel Aviron 2005

I recently partook in something somewhat ridiculous, at least for this student. I purchased a mixed case special shipment of 2005 Rhone and Burgundy wines from my local dealer. This was one of the bottles from those spoils. Man I love Burgundy!

An interesting mixed project between Potel and Aviron to produce an affordable but punchy wine from the Beaujolais region. The nose had light cherry fruit, pain grille (aka toast), and was intense and floral - in short, a truly beautiful confluence of odour. The palate was strawberry, cherry and tart. Sitting with great balance and poise this floral wine was very structured and of rich texture. A medium length finish did not at all detract from the very authentic flavours and texture. I love wine like this - completely unmanipulated terroir driven tastyness at a good price. I wish I could get more of this stuff.

Excellent
$33 at Marquis (via speical order)

I had a great beaujolais yesterday--something from St. Amour--that was very popular with my drinking buddies. Light, low tannins, a lot of berry. It was well-structured but very playful: more enjoyable than the Fleurie, Morgon, or Chenas beaujolais I've had--definitely more enjoyable than nouveau.

Thank God for beaujolais! Such a fantastic grouping of wines!

This one had a lot more body and complexity than your average beaujolais too. I recommend giving a try. I'll look for that St. Amour.

Hi Shea - I have enjoyed many wines from Morgon, but had my first Cote du Py recently in NYC - stunning. Top Bojo are very underrated, and in my mind an alternative to blowing your brains out on a $50 Burgundy. Is that Potel of Nicolas Potel, the Burgundy winemaker? And just what is Marquis- is BCLC flirting with private liquor stores? Where is that place?

It is indeed the same Potel. Great wine. We've had private stores for some time now in BC. But there are only a couple good ones. Marquis is perhaps the best store (although there is a good selection of stuff at the wine store next to steamworks in park royal in west van). Marquis is on Davie just west of burrard. I highly recommend you stop by if you are ever in town.

will do! I always go to the shop just one block west of the Hotel Vancouver (a pretty good store, in my opinion). Never really looked around

Ya that's the main public liquor store. However, they don't carry much small production stuff - that's what the good private stores are for.
